As part of the William G. Selby and Marie Selby Foundation 50th Anniversary Celebration, the public was invited to submit an essay on:
“How I am sharing my talents to make our community a better place”.
The Selby Foundation received essays from individuals between the ages of 5 and 90 and from 44 different zip codes from Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and DeSoto counties. Of the essays submitted, 100 were selected by a panel of volunteers comprised of community leaders and youth from Community Youth Development. One hundred trees, honoring the 100 essay winners, have been planted at Phillippi Estates Park. In cooperation with Sarasota County Parks and Recreation, who designed and will maintain this Selby Foundation Legacy Path, the trees were planted with assistance from the Sarasota Kiwanis Club and the Keystone Club of Sarasota County Boys and Girls Club. In addition to the trees provided by funding from the Selby Foundation, additional trees were contributed by Manatee Corrections Facility at Port Manatee.
On Tuesday, July 26, 2005 during the dedication ceremony at Phillippi Estates Park, the top ten essay winners each presented a check for $1,000 to the local nonprofit of their choice and the other 90 essay winners will each present a check for $100 to the local nonprofit of their choice.
