Selby Scholarship Program Scholarship

This scholarship is designed for students graduating from high school in Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte or DeSoto County or from Manatee Community College who reside in any of these counties who are pursuing a degree from a four-year college or university.

Over the years the William G. Selby and Marie Selby Foundation has invested in education by providing scholarships for undergraduate study. In the early 1900's Mr. Selby was well aware of the limitations workers faced because they could not afford a higher education. Mr. and Mrs. Selby were very interested in helping students with limited financial means in achieving an education with the goal of not only a meaningful career but also in helping their community.

Scholarships will be awarded up to $7,000 per year, not to exceed one third of the individual's financial need. Scholarships are renewable, with certain requirements, for the four years the student is a full-time student at an accredited college or university. Students receiving the Selby Scholar Program Scholarship will be called Selby Scholars. To enhance the impact of being a Selby Scholar, each recipient will be expected to attend the annual Selby Symposium conducted during the December/January holiday break. Selby Scholars are students with limited financial means who embrace Mr. and Mrs. Selby's values of leadership and service to his/her community.

Scholarship awards will be based on:

  • Demonstrated financial need.

  • 3.0 unweighted grade point average.

  • High school transcript showing SAT or ACT scores.

  • Evidence of personal growth potential through one recommendation from a teacher and two recommendations from community members describing the student's:
           · Active participation in school and/or community activities, and/or
           · Active employment to support self and/or family.

  •  Perspective on personal values and future plans reflected through essays

A letter from your school will be accepted as an official report of scores.  These scores are no longer included on transcripts and must be submitted separately.

Page 1 (of 7 pages) of the SAR indicates an estimated EFC (Expected Family Contribution) number which is used to determine eligibility for Federal student aid and is the minimum amount you are expected to contribute toward your education. This information is necessary to determine your financial need. Contact your Guidance Counselor or Financial Aid Office to obtain the FAFSA.
